What type of candle wax do you use?

100% soy wax. it’s natural, renewable, and grown + produced in the US. it is safe to burn, produces little to no soot, and fills a room with just the right amount of fragrance when mixed with scent!

due to the nature of our wax and the exclusion of additives to our process, you may notice bubbles, cracks or imperfections on the surface of your candle. additionally, we don’t add dyes to our wax, so certain fragrance oils may produce slight discoloration of the wax. none of these factors impact the quality or performance of your candle. they simply show how minimal we like to keep our ingredients.

What type of fragrance oils do you use?

they’re a blend of natural essential oils and non-toxic fragrance oils.

fragrance oils are used when an essential oil for a scent doesn’t exist or is too abstract. for example, leather. you can’t extract scent from a piece of leather, so the scent has to be scientifically formulated. we made sure that our fragrances not only perform well, but are safe for your home, your body, and our world.

in short, our fragrances oils are:

  • phthalate free
  • free from carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, organ toxins, and acute toxins. every fragrance excludes ingredients that would require a prop 65 warning label. have you ever seen this warning label on a product you’ve bought? if so, we highly recommend reading more here.
  • leaping bunny compliant
  • third party tested to ensure quality

How long do your products last?

8 oz candle: ~50-60 hours

12 oz candle: ~70-80 hours
5.75 oz reed diffuser: 5+ months
ceramic scent beads: 3+ months

Why isn't my favorite scent available in all products options?

we adhere to the IFRA standards and supplier recommendations for all of our products regarding safe formulations and performance. every fragrance has different usage amounts and performance qualities for different applications.

our fragrances are always being tested and reformulated by our supplier to ensure the high quality of our products. there’s a chance your favorite scent will become available in more options in the future!

Are your products vegan + cruelty free?

yes! all mundane branded products are vegan and cruelty free.

as we expand by carrying other brands and meeting the needs of our customers, not everything may be considered vegan. for example, we now carry natural beeswax candle sticks.

Are your products safe to use around my pets?

while our fragrances are as safe as possible, it's hard to know whether or not a pet will have a reaction to them. you can consult with your vet regarding any concerns prior to making a purchase. we're happy to provide additional info on specific fragrances if needed.

we have 2 dogs that live happily among our products, but every animal is different. we recommend being cautious and using our products as directed: keep your reed diffusers out of reach, don't spray the room spray when pets are nearby, and don't use our hand soap to wash your pets.

Are your products safe to use if I have a nut or other allergy?

similar to our response to pet safety, we cannot guarantee that any allergies will not be aggravated with the use of our products.

for nuts specifically: none of our fragrance oils contain nut ingredients, however we can't guarantee that the facility in which the fragrances are made is nut-free.

the same can be said for all of our products. we cannot make any guarantees, but if you have specific concerns, please reach out and we'll provide you with as much info as possible. we ask for your patience as we may have to reach out to our suppliers to provide specifics.

Can I curate a scent for my business or an event?

Can I wholesale your products in my shop?

yes! we offer wholesale for all of our products!

Scent Bar + Shop FAQ

How long does it take to create a custom scent?

this varies based on the size of your group. it can be anywhere from 30 - 60 minutes. when booking a reservation, you'll see approximately how long you can expect to be in store.

How much does it cost?

it depends on the product. we don't charge extra fees on top of our pricing. pricing ranges from $20 - 50+*

How long will it take for my candle to cool + set?

candles take about approximately 2 hours to set.

Can I burn my custom candle right away?

we recommend waiting at least until the following day to burn your custom candle. the longer you wait, the more your candle will cure and the scent will get stronger. if you can wait a few days before burning it, you'll get a better scent throw!

Can kids create their own products?

yes! we have a lot of young customers that truly enjoy the creative process of making their own scent. we offer a kid's tin for candles - just ask! we require supervision of an adult during the process.

What is your cancellation policy?

a credit card is required to be held for all reservations. you must contact us at least 24 hours in advance to cancel/reschedule or you may be charged a $20 cancellation fee at our discretion.

if you do not show up to your reservation and you do not contact us, you will be charged a $20 cancellation fee without exception.

by booking a reservation you agree to our cancellation policy.

What if I can't pick up the same day? How long will you hold my candle?

we'll hold your candle for up to 1 month. we'll email/call you around the 1 month mark to remind you to pickup within the next 2 weeks. if you can't pickup, we'll send you an invoice for our flat rate shipping fee to have your candle shipped to you.

please note: as of 2024, if we cannot get in contact with you for pickup or shipping after 1 month of holding your candle, we will gift your candle to another customer. we do not have space to store your candle. (if you're wondering - we have had a few custom candles sitting on our shelves for over 1 year, hence this new policy.)

Will you refill my jar once its empty?

refilling a pre-used jar can cause heat stress on the jar material and create safety issues. while we won’t refill your candle jar, we are happy to take your jars back to recycle. we’ll give you a $1 credit per returned jar off your next purchase.

if you’d prefer to keep and clean your own jars, there are so many ways to reuse a candle jar once its cleaned - pot a small plant, store pens or other small items, etc.

Do you have a bathroom?

no, we do not have a public bathroom. the village of cold spring provides a seasonal public restroom at the end of main street (near the train) at the visitor center.

Where do I park?

monday - thursday: street parking is free. there is also a metered municipal lot next to the riverview restaurant on fair street.

friday - sunday: street parking is metered from 10am - 6pm. meters are $2/hr with a 4 hour limit. you can park for free along 9D as well as in the metro north parking lot.

it can be especially busy on weekends, so we highly recommend giving yourself extra time to find parking to ensure you're on time for your custom scent reservation.

Do you allow food or drinks? What about alcohol?

for space and sanitary reasons, we do not allow food of any kind at our scent bar. if you have a coffee or drink from one of the many local cafes in cold spring, we just ask that you be mindful of spills while you’re in store.

we don't believe that alcohol is a necessary component to having fun, so we do not allow alcohol in our shop. there are great restaurants and a local wine bar for you to enjoy while you wait in town for your candles to set.

Order + Shipping FAQ

How long will it take to receive my order?

every product is made to order and will ship in 3-5 days (excluding weekends) after placing your order.

we currently ship within the contiguous U.S. through USPS or UPS. you’ll receive tracking to your email once your package ships.

How do you package my order?

we save + reuse any packaging that we receive in our supply shipments to pack your orders. the materials used will vary (biodegradable peanuts, kraft paper, bubble wrap, etc).

our main goals are to make sure your products arrive in one piece + to reduce additional packaging waste. although we would love to send you the most beautifully curated package, we place more importance on eliminating the need to purchase/manufacture additional packing supplies as much as possible.

Do you accept returns or exchanges?

no, all sales are final. in the case of making an exception, we will offer the option to exchange or take a store credit. we do not offer refunds.

we encourage you to email us to discuss any hesitations you may have before making a purchase so we can ensure you’ll love your products.

we understand that sometimes a solution is not one size fits all. if for some reason you’re not satisfied, we will make it right based on your individual circumstance. you can email us at alexandra@mundanenewyork.com with any concerns about your order.

Do you have shipping restrictions in the summer?

yes - we only ship monday - wednesday during the summer. this is to prevent as much fluctuation as possible with temperature and your candle potentially sitting in a shipping facility for multiple days.
